Judge Susan Steeg

Voted Best Qualified by the Austin Bar Association
  •  Reducing Truancy
Implemented a juvenile case management program, the first justice court in Travis County to do so. I am the only program in Travis County to use a social work case management model that includes follow up services to the students at school and home visits when necessary with parents.  I have developed partnerships with the University of Texas at Austin and Texas State University to be a training internship site for graduating social work students, both at the bachelor's and master's levels.  Under the supervision of my case manager, JP3 has developed a robust truancy reduction program that has delivered on my promise to make school attendance a priority.  By increasing days in school and decreasing unexcused absences, the Austin, Lake Travis, and Westlake Independent School Districts have received tens of thousands of dollars in additional state funding, relieving the local taxpayers of this burden.
  •    Leading Innovation
Replaced the 25 year old DOS case management systems with Windows-based software that is "in the cloud."  I lead a project that culminated in the selection of a contractor in April 2012.  My office was the pilot site.  The five Justice of the Peace courts and Travis County Central Collections converted five different programs (supporting case management and financial activities).  The $2 million project was completed on time and within budget in August 2013.  Travis County is the first county in Texas to purchase this system as "Software as a Service."
  • Streamlining Government

Initiated a legislative change to reduce transactions for accepting funds in criminal cases.  My legislation was endorsed by Travis and Tarrant Counties, the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas, the Texas Conference of Urban Counties, and the Texas Justice of the Peace and Constables Association.  The bill was passed and signed by the Governor.

  • Improving Access
Bus service to the Precinct 3 offices began in August 2008.  I worked with city and state leaders to have a traffic signal installed that was a prerequisite for service.
